The Caird

Housed in a venerable 19th century mansion, 172’s storied past threatens to overshadow its food. Thankfully, its proprietors have pulled out all the stops to come up with cuisine that’s every bit as the memorable as the building it’s served in. The mansion, which was once home to a prominent Dundee industrialist, has been extensively refurbished and today forms a spacious restaurant and entertainment complex in one. The menu comes courtesy of a trio of acclaimed chefs whose inventiveness and flair shines through in every dish, from the small plates to the more extravagant a la carte offerings. The chicken and avocado salad is served with roasted red peppers and a light harissa dressing, while the house burger is stacked high with bacon, gherkins and tomatoes and served with skinny fries. For dessert, try the apple and marmalade tart that’s indulgent but oh so tasty. 172 At the Caird also serves up exquisite cocktails and stocks a good selection of wines, beer and spirits. In the evenings, the lounge area comes to life with live pianists and guitarists providing the soundtrack to a sophisticated evening of food and drink.

We came to the Caird for a family get together and had a fabulous time. There was around 20 of us in total and we had use of their gorgeous events space upstairs with great views of the Tay. The staff were helfpul and attentive, and the food was fantastic and not your bog standard buffet selection. The chicken and chorizo skewers being my personal fave. When we had finished our lunch they had offered to reserve tables downstairs in the bar for us, which was a great touch as it was a saturday night so it saved us from having to traipse round town to find seats to have a drink.
